Frequently asked questions

What TriNetra does, what it holds, and who is allowed to ask.

What is TriNetra?

TriNetra is a city-wide ANPR trajectory and urban traffic analytics platform. It joins plate reads from every camera in a city into single vehicle trajectories, shows live traffic conditions, forecasts road behaviour ahead, and simulates the effect of closing a road — all from one dataset.

What is ANPR?

Automatic Number Plate Recognition: cameras that detect vehicles and read their registration plates automatically, without an operator reviewing each frame.

How does TriNetra reconstruct a vehicle's trajectory across multiple cameras?

Each camera reading carries plate text, a visual fingerprint of the vehicle and a timestamp. Readings of the same vehicle across different cameras are scored together and joined, then map-matched onto the real street network so the trajectory follows roads that actually exist rather than a straight line between two points.

What is the difference between Smriti, Drishti and Bhavishya?

Smriti is the recorded past — trajectory search and history. Drishti is the present — live camera density, vehicles in motion and real-time alerts. Bhavishya is the near future — a short-horizon traffic forecast for each junction. See how it works for detail.

How does TriNetra prevent misuse of surveillance data?

Every query that touches vehicle data must carry a stated purpose and case ID, is bound to the requester's enforced role, and is written to a hash-chained audit ledger that cannot be edited after the fact. This subsystem is called Kavach. See the privacy policy for the full detail.

What data does TriNetra collect and store?

Vehicle registration marks captured by ANPR cameras, the camera, time and location of each capture, and the audit record of who queried what data and why. See the privacy policy for the complete list and retention periods.

Who can access TriNetra and how are roles enforced?

Access is limited to five roles — patrol, investigator, analyst, auditor and super_admin — each seeing only the views its work requires. Role checks run on the server on every request, not only in the interface.

What is the digital twin / road closure simulation?

A what-if tool: pick a road, simulate closing it, and TriNetra runs the city network twice — once as-is, once with the closure — to show which junctions absorb the diverted traffic.

Where is TriNetra deployed?

The reference deployment covers New Delhi, spanning 45 cameras across a 7,362-edge road network.

Who built TriNetra?

TriNetra was built against Smart India Hackathon problem statement SIH26127, set by Bharat Electronics Limited.
